The new European Cybersecurity Competence Centre to be located in Bucharest, Romania
Bucharest, Romania will host the European Cybersecurity Industrial, Technology, and Research Competence Centre (ECCC), which has the objective of improving cyber-resilience and supporting cybersecurity research across the EU. On 9 December 2020, representatives of the governments of the EU member states voted on the seat of the ECCC and Bucharest was selected among the other locations that offered to host the Centre: Belgium (Brussels), Germany (Munich), Lithuania (Vilnius), Luxembourg, Poland (Warsaw) and Spain (Leon).
Romania ranks 3rd in the EU statistics referring to the women ICT specialists, much beyond the EU average. No less than 24% of ICT graduates in Romania are female, providing one of the most inclusive and gender-balanced work culture and environment.
The Center will play an important role in supporting the establishment of links between public and private actors in the field, academia and the EU industry, while ensuring coordination between the national cybersecurity centers in the Member States.
The new European Cybersecurity Competence Centre will work to stimulate research and technological innovation in order to strengthen cyber security within the EU. It will be the main body for managing European funds dedicated to cybersecurity research available through the two EU funding programs, relevant to the sector - Digital Europe and Horizon Europe. The Competence Centre shall be established for the period from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2029.
